Motivation for Mentoring
Terrence Joseph Wilson’s motivation for mentoring comes from his desire
to help young men develop the potential they were born with. He sees in the
young men what they do not see themselves. Someone once told him, "See a man
as he is and he will stay in that condition but see a man for whom he can become
and he will grow into the man he is supposed to be." He believes that
because of the many people who believed in him, even when he did not believe
in himself.
Key Activities with Mentees
Involvement in a variety of sporting events and activities provides a great opportunity for bonding and a comfortable environment to build relationships. Outings have included attending traditional and non-traditional events popular with young men (i.e. Piston and Lions games, go-kart racing, visits to arcades, put-put golf, movies and a batting cage, etc). Wilson ensures his mentees are introduced to variety of new experiences that help develop character, broaden their outlook on life, and provide opportunities to socialize with larger groups of people.
Being actively involved in a spiritual community, Wilson also includes activities sponsored by his church's men group, offering interaction with other positive adults. He spends a great deal of time listening and coaching too.
